چکیده

Biofilms are multicellular communities of bacteria. The ability to form biofilm is a universal attribute of bacteria and as bacteria can form biofilm in medical, industrial and environmental settings, it impacts human lives in many different ways. Bacteria undergo profound physiologic, morphologic and genetic changes as the transit from planktonic (free swimming, non-biofilm) form to surface attached biofilms. As bacteria in biofilm exhibit enhanced resistance to antibiotics and clearance by the host immune system, biofilm has been an intensely researched area for microbiologists, immunologists and pharmaceutical scientists alike. This review focuses on current knowledge on biofilm science, clinical relevance and virulence of biofilm, host response to it and therapeutic options to

Evaluation of humoral immunity and protective efficacy of biofilm producing Staphylococcus aureus bacterin-toxoid prepared from a bovine mastitis isolate in rabbit

Mastitis is a one of the major diseases of dairy animals. Staphylococcus aureus is the most common microorganism associated with this dairy scourge. Cure rates of mastitis associated with this pathogen are appallingly low. Biofilm is an important virulence factor and immunogenic structure of S. aureus that makes it resistant to phagocytosis and antibiotics. Reports on the efficacy of vaccine pr...

Bacterial biofilms: a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge.

Bacteria have traditionally been regarded as individual organisms growing in homogeneous planktonic populations. However, bacteria in natural environments usually form communities of surface-adherent organisms embedded in an extracellular matrix, called biofilms. Current antimicrobial strategies often fail to control bacteria in the biofilm mode of growth. Treatment failure is particularly freq...

Synthesis and characterization of ciprofloxacin loaded histidine modified chitosan nanoparticle for eradication of Pseudomonas aeroginosa biofilm

Background: Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm is one of the problems in antibiotic treatment of infections. Nanomedicines such as chitosan can carry multiple drugs and improve the therapeutic effects of antibiotics. Objectives: The study aimed to synthesis and characterization of ciprofloxacin loaded chitosan nanoparticle for eradication biofilm of P. aeroginosa. Methods: Cipro-CS microparticles...

Antibiotic resistance: a "dark side" of biofilm‑associated chronic infections.

Bacteria may exist in nature in a planktonic form or in biofilms that allow bacteria to survive in an unfriendly microenvironment. Biofilm is a structured community of bacteria hidden in a self-produced polymeric matrix of polysaccharides, proteins, and extracellular DNA. Biofilm-growing bacteria cause chronic infections, which are characterized by persisting inflammation and tissue damage (chr...

Co-delivery of nitric oxide and antibiotic using polymeric nanoparticles.

The rise of hospital-acquired infections, also known as nosocomial infections, is a growing concern in intensive healthcare, causing the death of hundreds of thousands of patients and costing billions of dollars worldwide every year. In addition, a decrease in the effectiveness of antibiotics caused by the emergence of drug resistance in pathogens living in biofilm communities poses a significa...
